Giveaways For Good

The Ivy Twines is fighting back against modern slavery by offering 10 extra entries in nearly all her giveaways this month to anyone who will share their plan to fight slavery.  Your plan can be as simple as signing a petition, or sharing a  video or copy pasting my 10 facts about modern slavery on on your blog.  Just for that you can get ten extra entries in these great giveaways....

This was actually a give-back I suggested (when she was asking last month about issues we cared about), and I'm happy to see that a few people have participated.  I'd love to see more!

There's one more giveaway for good I've stumbled on this month.  Our Whiskey Lullaby is giving away tokens (credits to buy stuff) for PS Give, a site which helps you find deals while earning money for charity.

If you know of any other giveaways for good, please submit them here.

Hop and Squidoo

Hello, and welcome fellow Squido Lensmasters! For those who aren't travelling here by blog hop and don't know what Squidoo is, it's just a place where you can make nifty little web pages about any topic you choose, and maybe earn a little money for yourself or a charity in the process.

This week I have a lens about Generic/Store Brand Products I'd like to highlight and ask for help with.  On it I talk about how to save by buying generic, and have a plexo list where visitors can contribute and vote on their favorite and least favorite store brand products.  I'd love to see more additions to the list!  If you have a store brand product that you've tried and loved, or tried and hated...please stop by and add it!

Also on the site is a link plexo where you can add your favorite money saving link.  Unfortunately, I've gotten a lot of spam on this, and I'm not sure if it adds much to the page.  What do you think...should I keep the links plexo or get rid of it?

Do you have a money saving Squidoo lens?  I still have room on my sidebar widget for another lens:  Would you like to trade?  I could trade link on my sidebar for a link on yours, or somewhere else on a lens you have?  If you're interested, please leave a comment and let me know, or e-mail me at ecarian at yahoo dot com.

Aloha Friday/Two Question Thursday - Poetry

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Every Friday (well, ok, almost every Friday) I ask a simple question for you to answer--nothing that requires a lengthy response.  I'm combining this with Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).

This week I've stumbled on a Poetry Giveaway Event. I'm a poetry lover, so the chance to win books of poetry is exciting to me.  Which brings me to my questions for this week...

So, this week's questions are related to that:
  1. Do you enjoy reading poetry?
  2. If so, what's your favorite poet or poem?
You can answer in the comments.  Thanks!

I love poetry, and my favorite poets are Seamus Heaney,  Sarah Teasdale,  Shakespeare, and a lot of poets who aren't so famous, who I met online.

If you have a blog and would like to post your own questions you can leave your link on the appropriate day at the linkys at 2 Questions Thursday and An Island Life.

What We Won Wednessday

Every week (nearly, unless I'm sick as a dog like last week or just too busy) I plan to join What We Won Wednessday and share a few of the things I've won (recently or in the past).  This week I'm sharing some food related items I've won.

Recently I won some Reusies Snack Bags over at the blog Of Another Cinnamon.  They are super cute and will be super useful once I start packing my kids lunch again (recently we've been buying lunches, cause we've had so many illnesses it was just one less thing to do...but I plan to go back to packing soon.)

Not so recently I won the cookbook pictured above.   Jennifer Bourassa, a lady I met on MomPack was, was holding a contest to find a name for a cookbook she was selling to earn money for her son's Martial Arts Class.  Though she didn't end up using any of the titles people submitted, she used a subtitle I submitted, and so I won the book, along with some other goodies, including a gift card to her Noah's Arc shop (which I never used, and it expired) and Wildtree Guacamole Seasoning, which was tasty!  The book is called...

Self Defense with Health Defense
Good for your taste buds, good for your body,
and for a good cause.

It has some fun recipes, and cute illustrations by her son (he did the cover art too).  She's not selling them anymore...wish I had shared this while she still was.

Here's one I'll share with you all:

Black Bean Dip

INGREDIENTS

1 19 oz  or 15 oz can black beans
1/2 cup prepared salsa, hot or mild
2 Tbsp fresh lime juice
2 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
1/4 tsp ground cumin
Salt and Pepper to Taste
Combine all ingredients, except salt and pepper, in food processor. Process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.

The Geekiest Kids Room Ever - Free Growth Chart and More

My husband has turned me geeky....and turned out kids geeky.  They are Star Wars fanatics and we let them watch Star Trek and occasionally the older one gets to watch Dr. Who with us (a new discovery on NetFlicks).  Well, this growth chart has characters  from all of those...starts with tribbles on the bottom and ends with Darth Vader on the top.  AWESOME!

If you are looking for some art to go with this geeky mode of kid decor, then just head on over and check out the artwork of James Hance, who's works features mash up of Star Wars with Winnie the Pooh, Calvin and Hobs, Mupets and more (he has many other other mash-ups involving various cartoons, superheroes, and Sc-fi classics...my favorite has to be his Dr. Who/Back to the Future Mash-up).  And prints are only $10!  Plus he has an adorable Winnie the Pooh style children's book called Wookie and the Chew.  Make sure your kiddos have read the original Pooh first, then introduce them to the fine art of parody!

Sponsor a Giveaway

Hello!  I'm happy to host giveaways on this site if you would like to provide the product (even a small, low cost item).    I also have some options for combined giveaways which allow you to offer a giveaway for your products without paying the full price of providing a prize.  Plus, I offer some promotional extras when you sponsor a regular or combined giveaway here. You can see an example of a combined giveaway here

THE HEARTS SHOULD BE FREE EVENT GIVEAWAYS
In February I host an event to help raise awareness about human trafficking, a modern form of slavery.  I am looking for fair trade and hand-made products to give away, and may also be doing a combined giveaway specifically to raise money for an organization which helps victims of human trafficking.    If you are interested in either of these please contact me at ecarian at yahoo dot com.  To learn more about the event, click here.

INDIVIDUALLY SPONSORED GIVEAWAYS
If you would prefer to giveaway an item from your shop without doing a combined giveaway, I'm happy to host these type of items too.  Just let me know about the product and how you want it presented.  If you want to send me product too I am happy to review it, and will put the review on my other blogs (scribbleprints.blogspot.com and texifornia.blogspot.com too) if it seems appropriate.  For smaller "work from home" shops, artists, hand-crafters, Zazzle and other POD artists, and for fair trade companies  I will sometimes do this without any compensation, but for more established companies I require a sample of the product or a reasonable payment. Contact me at ecarian at yahoo dot com if you are interested.

COMBINED GIVEAWAYS
In a combined giveaway several shops all contribute a small amount ($3 - $5) to a joint giveaway, and I use this to offer a  gift certificate ($15 - $20) which the winner can use at any of the partipating shops.  All the shops get traffic and exposure, but each pays less than they would pay if they were offering a giveaway by themselves.
On Such Fun to Give, a portion of your contribution goes to the prize, and a portion goes to charity.  Each participating shop also is encouraged to help promote the giveaway by listing it in online linkies (free sites that allow you to list giveaways) or $1 extra to be used towards advertising, and are encouraged to help promote in other ways too.  This helps build traffic for everyone involved.

COMBINED GIVEAWAY OPTIONS
E-mail me at ecarian at yahoo dot com if you are interested in any of the options below.  Once I get enough participates I will contact everyone again, collect the money, and get the giveaway up on the site. .

The winner can choose to spend their giveaway money at any of the particpating shops.  The particpating shops agree give the winner free shipping on the items they purchase with their winnings (since they pay full price hopefully the profits on those items will cover shipping), and I will pay the shopkeepers via pay-pal.  If the winner chooses to spend more than the giveaway amount, the shopkeeper and the winner should work out details of payment (including if any shipping will be charged on items over the giveaway amount) with the shopkeeper.

Giveaways For Good - Extra Entries for a Good Cause

Would you like to earn 10 extra entries in these great giveaways?
(scroll down to find out how)

You can  get ten extra entries to all of these giveaways by participating in the Ivy Twines Break the Chains Give Back Challenge.  All you have to do is share your plan to fight modern slavery (an epidemic that few people today know affects  12.3 million children and adults around the world) on her give back post.  Does fighting slavery sound difficult?   It isn't.  Your plan to fight slavery could be so simple as tweeting her give-back post, copy pasting my 10 facts about modern slavery on on your blog, or sharing this this video in your facebook status...since educating others is one way to fight slavery.  Simple!  And her giveback post lists other ways you can help too.  You don't even have to do anything right now to get the extra entries...if you're busy at the moment  just leave a comment on her giveback post telling what you plan to do soon. THAT COUNTS!

I was actually the person who suggested this issue  last month to her when she was asking Ivy Twines readers to share about a cause or Charity that they cared about.  When I found out she choose that for her monthly give back I was so encouraged, but what's discouraging is that so far no one seems to be taking her up on those 10 extra entries.  So please, take part in this challenge!  You help a good cause while doing something to help your chances in some very cool giveaways.  And you'll bring a big ole smile to my face to boot.  :-)

If you Squidoo, and want to help with Japan Relief efforts, you can re-set the payments settings on your lenses to donate to a charities helping with these efforts.
The following Squidoo charities are listed on Charity Navigator as places you can give to help earthquake/tsunami victims:

If you make a large amount monthly it might be better to cash out as usual and send in a check directly, as you can designate specifically what you want the money to go toward. But if, like me, you make just a little each month, pooling your money with other Squids donating makes a lot of sense.  If you don't currently Squidoo, it's easy to set up a lens for charity.  You can do a lens with your favorite recipes, book reviews, craft tutorials, or any other subject you like. Click here to get started!

I also hope you'll check out my Shop4Charity lens, where I have featured several shops donating a part or all of their proceeds to support Japan Relief efforts.  While donating directly is best, if you are shopping for Mother's Day or birthday or just for something you need, shopping at a place that donates is another way to help.

Together We can! Help Japan button button

The graphics shown in this post, except for the Blog Hop Graphic, are all designs donated by Zazzle artists to Zazzle's Japan Relief Store.

St. Patricks Day Blog Crawl

Hello everyone!  I'm stopping in for the Annual St. Patricks Day Blog Crawl at Cuisine Kathleen.

I've become more of a fan of St. Patricks Day since I learned more about St. Patrick...a man who was kidnapped as a teen, sold as a slave in Ireland, escaped, and later returned to preach the Gospel in the land where he was once enslaved.  I'm not inspired much by luck and leprechauns, but that's moving!   Ironically, I learned that from a small clip of a Veggie Tales Video called Sumo of the Opera (which doesn't seem like it should have anything about St. Patrick in it, but it does).  I've read up a little more here, and  plan to read his Confessio before this this week is over.

This year, inspired by all this and wanting to learn more, I started a little linky party of my own to celebrate the religious roots of this holiday....you can find it on my other blog by clicking the button below:

I've also been collecting some lovely printables I've found on various blogs...here's my fave by Lady Bird Ln (yes, I asked permission, and she was nice enough to give it).

You see, while I don't believe in luck, I do believe in providence...that God intervenes in our lives.  Coincidence is just when God performs a miracle and chooses to remain anonymous.

So...

May God give you...
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

St. Patrick's Day Printables - Blessings

Though I don't believe much in luck, I am a firm believer in providence...that what seems like chance or luck may be the hand of God.    So, I am really loving these Blessings printables.

This printable is by Nifty Thrifty Things.

This printable is by Auntie LOL Crafts.

These two printables are by Lady Bird Ln.

St. Patrick Day Printables - Humor

Yesterday I featured some nifty free Shamrock Printables I found online.  Today, I've got a small collection of  witty St. Patrick's Day Printables....all free.

I'm loving these next to "Keep Calm" Parodies...

This one is by Two Twenty One.

And here's one by The Answer is Chocolate.

Now, I'm not much of a believer in luck (yeah, honestly...kind of ironic for a giveaway blogger...though I enter free blog giveaways with fairly good odds, not the lottery.)   Maybe that's why I love this tongue and cheek snarky quote by Thomas Jefferson that was made into a printable on C.R.A.F.T..

Check in Monday for some Blessings Printables!

Aloha Friday - St. Patrick

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Every Friday (well, ok, almost every Friday) I ask a simple question for you to answer--nothing that requires a lengthy response.

Last week I asked what was the first that came to mind of when you thought of St. Patrick's Day.  Here's the answers I got, in order of most to least...

  • Green (or wearing green) - 5x*
*more than that if you include green clover or green beer, or green Shamrock cookies.

  • Corned beef and cabbage - 5x (2x with potatoes 1x with carrots mentioned)

  • Shamrocks, clovers, or 4 leaf clovers - 5x (if you count the shamrock cookies)

  • Green beer - 3x

  • Irish Soda Bread - 2x

  • Leprechauns - 2x if you count...

  • Leprachaun, the Movie - 1x

  • Posts of gold - 1x

  • Gold coins - 1x

  • Rainbows - 1x

  • Guiness - 1x

  • Green shamrock cookies - 1x
I was surprised that Ireland or Irish wasn't mentioned (except as part of Irish Soda Bread).  What I wasn't surprised about was that St. Patrick himself, or anything in did or was thought to do, wasn't mentioned.  Until a few years ago I had no idea who he was or why a holiday was named after him.  Turns out he was a fascinating man with a fascinating story.   If you'ld like to learn more about him, there's a great blog post about that here.  But before you read that, please answer my question...

  • What do you know about St. Patrick?

You can answer in the comments.  Thanks!  And, if you would like to join me for a Linky Party celebrating St. Patrick's Day as a religious holiday, I will be posting up a linky at my other blog, Scribbleprints sometime today.

Free St. Patrick's Day Printables

There's a lot of creative bloggers out there who have made some really great free printables for St. Patricks Day.  So many in fact, I found too many for just one post...so I'm going to be sharing these the next three days.

First, some really great Shamrock designs!

Did you know that legend says St. Patrick explained the Holy Trinity using a Shamrock? Just as the three leaves of the Shamrock are separate leaves in one leaf, so the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are separate yet one.

When you find a 4 leaf clover, the 4th leaf is said to stand for the Grace of God.

 Now, on to the printables!

First, a cute Happy St. Patrick's Desing
by Nifty Thrifty Things.

I think this 4 leaf clover printable by by
Crafts and Such is absolutely beautiful!

I love the beautiful Shamrock stationery

I like this simple cheerful clover

And if you'ld like something a little more
intricate, here's my own clover coloring page.

And here's another great printable kids
activity from Chalk in My Pocket.

And here's some cute cupcake toppers
over at Holiday Haven.

I'll be posting more printable round-ups the next few days. Hope you'll come back and see.

7 Facts About Modern Slavery

Did you know that there are more slaves today than there were before the civil war?  While legal slavery in the US ended with emancipation, throughout the world and even in the US, slavery continues.   I'm not talking about people paid too little, or "enslaved" by their circumstances, but slavery in the traditional sense, where people are forced to work or prostitute themselves and kept enslaved through  fraud, coercion and threat of violence.

This page formerly listed 10 facts about modern slavery, but new research has caused the need for an update (this post was updated in January 2014).  Here are 7 updated facts from recent reports about modern slavery.
  1. There is an estimated 27 million people in the world enslaved today.
  2. Human trafficking is the modern term for the "slave trade."
  3. Traffickers maintain control of their victims through various means, including violence, coercion  and threats of harm to loved ones.
  4. 27% of known trafficking victims are children.
  5. Sex trafficking accounts for 58% of all human trafficking.  Forced labor makes up around 38%.  Other forms of human trafficking include forced marriage, transportation of people for organs, and forced enlistment of child soldiers.
  6. Victims of  forced labor have been found in nearly every job setting imaginable...including factories, restaurants, private homes, medical facilities, farms, and construction sites.
  7. While poverty can leave people more vulnerable to enslavement, this is not just a third-word problem.  Slavery is present even in developed nations like the United States.

Would you like to do something to stop slavery?  One simple thing you can do is spread the word!  Please feel free to copy this list and share it on your blog, tweet about it, etc.   I don't require any credit or back-link, but if you use this list verbatim, please also let others know that they may share this list.

    What I Won!

I'm joining in with What We Won Wednesday to share and say a little thank you for all the things I've won in blog giveaways lately.  Really, I have a lot of giveaways I've won that I meant to blog about in thanks, but never got around to it...so this will be a nice reminder to do that.  But this week, I'm just going to start with a couple things I got in the mail this month.

First, I won these really cool Charlie Harper ABC/123 Nesting Blocks at Mama Hill.

You notice the first thing he did with them was stack
    them upside down.  :-)

This blurry action shot shows the blocks a little better.

The other thing I won  was a Robby Wash Ball at Girly Girl Giveaways--that's a year's worth of laundry detergent in one little ball!  It really works too...I've tried it out and my clothes come out clean.

What am I going to do with the money I'm saving?  Well, part of it is going to go to suppor the Mercy House Maternity Home in Kenya.  This is a ministry just beininng, created by a woman from the US and a women in Kenya to help young pregnant girls in an area where there is currently no program helping them.  They are starting small.  They want to provide 6 beds in a safe gaurded house, pre-natal care, counceling (as many of these girls have been forced into prostitution at a young age), meals, and biblical teaching...as well as teach them skills they can use to provide for themselves and their children after they graduate from the program so they don't have to return to prostitution.
